Prison Island Tortoise Sanctuary

The sanctuary protects giant Aldabra tortoises, some of which are over 190 years old.

The island was bought in 1893 to build a prison complex. The first tortoises arrived later as a gift from the Seychelles governor in 1919. Today, the sanctuary operates to protect these endangered animals.

Visitors can observe the adult tortoises and see the protected nursery area. You must follow strict conservation rules. Do not sit on or place heavy weight on the tortoises.

This caged area keeps the young tortoises safe from predators. They stay here until they grow large enough to roam freely. Look closely at their shells. The staff paints numbers on them to indicate their exact age.
